Despite being a massive fan of Armando Iannucci and Steve Coogan I didn’t overly enjoy their stage production of Dr. Stranglove.
It’s an odd show. Coogan only really shines in one of the four characters he plays (Dr. Strangelove) and the script doesn’t display much evidence of Ianucci’s famously clever and acerbic wit.
Some of the staging, however, is very well done although the overriding feeling I was left with was: ‘what was the point?’
There is scant new topical material to justify a brand new version and so one was left pining for the brilliance of the original movie.
